4.For each of the following questions, give short and
clear scientific answer(s):
(a) Both miombo tree and a maize plant absorb water
from the soil. If we bark ring the stem of miombo completely down to the
phloem, what would happen to its leaves after 2 weeks? Explain.
(b) A farmer removed half of the leaves from an
orange that is bearing many fruits. Using your knowledge of source-sink,
predict what will happen to the size of the fruits. Explain.
(c) Water potential in cell A (Ψ in source) = -0.2
MPa, Water potential in Cell B (Ψ in sink) = 0.9 MPa.
(i) Which direction/path will be taken by water and
cell sap?
(ii) Give reason.
(d) In one paragraph only, briefly explain how phloem
translocation occurs in plants.
