After studying this topic, you will be able to:

♠ explain how colligative properties of solutions are used to determine the molar

masses of solutes.

♠ describe the Raoult’s law which governs colligative properties.

– discuss Raoult’s law, Blagden’s law and molar solutions

– the elevation of boiling point and depression of freezing point

– the relative lowering of vapour pressure and osmotic pressure.

♠ determine the relative molar masses of solutes from Raoult’s law.

♠ determine the degree of strong electrolytes in solution.
