CHEMISTRY FORM FIVE PCB & PCM MID-TERM EXAMINATION
SEPT-2026 (HAI SECONDARY SCHOOL)
QN 1.
(a) Describe the Rutherford’s observation that:
(i) The nucleus has a relatively smaller diameter compared with that of an
atom.
(ii) Most of the mass of an atom is concentrated in the nucleus.
(b)
(i) What part of Bohr’s theory of the atom is considered unrealistic as a
result of Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle?
(ii) Calculate the uncertainty in the velocity of a bullet whose mass is 10g
and its position is known with an accuracy of ± 0.1nm.
(iii) A hydrogen atom with an electron in its ground state interacts with
photon of light wavelength of 1.22 × 10⁻⁷ m. Could electron make transition
from ground state to higher energy level? If it does make a transition indicate
which one. If no transition occurs explain.
(c) By using boxes and arrows (orbital diagrams) draw
electronic configurations of:
(i) Chromium Cr
(ii) Copper Cu.
